Another Generation "why" experience ...
This week I interviewed a candidate who didn't think there was anything even slightly strange about the fact that she was in fact looking for her third permanent job in a two year period. What I personally found very amusing was the fact that when she was talking me through her list of strengths and achievements, she actually described herself as being "fiercely loyal"!Just who exactly was she trying to kid here?
She then went on to describe how her "twenties had catapulted her to where she is today" and that she was now looking for the role that would "see her into her thirties"! I immediately read that to mean until she's at least 31!
I read an article recently that explained how, on average, Generation Y'ers will undertake up to 29 job changes throughout their careers. Did my candidate seriously expect me to be the one to find her every single one of them? Perhaps even in the next 10 years? That would bring a whole new meaning to the concept of career partner!
Now whilst you may be ambitious, it's important not to describe yourself as being "fiercely loyal", "totally burnt out" or "having outgrown the role" to a recruiter or potential employer when you have in fact only been in a role for less than a year. This type of reasoning just won't sit properly with them.
Of course it's important to know your reasons for leaving and to be able to talk through these reasons during an interview, but please ensure your rationale is appropriate and matches the story you are trying to convey.
