The social media phenomenon ...
A friend of mine in the USA forwarded an article to me this week which really made me stop and reflect on the social media phenomenon. It talked about how around the world people spend up to eight billion minutes on Facebook every day. EIGHT BILLION MINUTES! That is absolutely incredible when you think about the fact that six years ago it didn't even exist. Actually it was created on October 28th, 2003 ... pretty much six years ago to the day. This then prompted me to look at some of the other social media platforms out there and while on my own research mission, I came across quite a few interesting facts:
Did you know that Flickr contains nearly four billion images? Or that one hundred million videos are viewed on YouTube every single day!
At a more local level, 73% of Australians are connected to the internet and 41% of Australians access the internet from their mobile phones. Actually there is an entire generation growing up where their mobile phone will in fact be their first connection to the web.
This week both my knowledge and respect for the power behind social media and globalisation increased exponentially ... and this just reinforced why I enjoy recruiting in the IT space.
If anyone has any other stats to share, feel free to comment ... but you may want to limit your comment to just 140 characters!
