Finding work on the information super highway

A few weeks ago I posted a blog entry which included some pretty phenomenal statistics around social networking ... like the fact that around the world there are up to eight billion minutes spent on Facebook every day.

I was talking to a colleague yesterday who works in the on-line job board space and during our conversation he happened to mention another fairly astounding statistic: the fact that here in Australia alone there are in excess of 50 million job-related searches on Google alone every month!

This means that candidates (predominantly) are using Google as a search engine to find a new job. Whereas a few years ago a job seeker may have entered something like "IT jobs Sydney" and been inundated with results, they have since learned to be far more specific in their search criteria and are entering more specific key words such as "System/Solution Architect Cross Domain Spatial Data Infrastructure Melbourne" and are finding far more targeted results.

I also discovered that less than 20% of successful candidate attraction today is coming from the pure on-line job boards which also surprised me. But I was pleased to hear that candidates are actually preferring to look for jobs on recruitment agency web sites as well as on the web sites of organisations choosing to advertising directly on their career pages as opposed to having to use the big employment job boards.

So as the market turns (which fortunately seems to be the general feeling) the search engines are certainly going to be kept nice and busy. But a tip for anyone looking for work in the months ahead ... the more specific you are in your search criteria, the easier it will be for you to find something that's perfectly suited to your experience, skill-set and competencies.

Happy Googling!
